I saw this female gerenuk at the Mountain View Conservation and Breeding Centre.  The name means, literally, “giraffe-necked”, because their necks are so much longer than those of other species of gazelles.  They will often stand on their hind legs to eat leaves on medium sized trees!

This is a herd of gerenuks; unlike other gazelles, only the male has horns, which curve back and are sharply ridged.  I saw these gerenuks at the Mountain View Conservation and Breeding Centre.

Mohrr Gazelles are extinct in the wild.  They are now bred in only a select few places in the world; Mountain View Conservation and Breeding Centre in Fort Langley, British Columbia, Canada is one of those places.  Recently the centre  released this herd of Mohrr Gazelles to a park  in the United Arab Emirates.

The area where these gazelles used to roam was northern Africa, from Morocco to Senegal, along the edge of the Sahara desert, an area called  “Sahar”.

I saw this Trumpeter Swan romancing his mate at Saskatoon Lake, Alberta,  and found them irresistible.
